Train Cuts 18 Wheeler in Half

On a Friday at the end of July, an 18 wheeler was cut in half by a train in Bonham.

According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the accident happened shortly after noon around 2.5 miles north of the City of Union in the Bonham Community when a 2001 Kenworth Tractor Trailer being driven by 46 year old Andrew Leroy Patterson of Browns Summit, NC was trying to turn on to the Sonoco Road from the Jonesville Highway (SC 18).

The trailer could not cross the railways tracks quickly enough and was hit by a Norfolk & Southern train.

Patterson and his passenger both managed to exit the truck before the train smashed into it. The train driver was 44 year old James A. Holley of Greenville, and he was also uninjured.

The collision caused a fuel leak from the train which meant that several emergency responders attended the scene including Fire Services and Emergency Management teams.

No charges were filed in connection with the collision at this time.
